It can be a terrifying step to take, but people have been successful doing it. These days authors seem to get better deals self-publishing. Good luck.

Thanks for the reality check. I've been sitting on my novel for quite sometime - shopping it around and saying "I'm a writer, not a publicist." Part of me knew that I should take the chance and self-publish it - I've even taken the steps by having the cover designed. I suppose it would be more advantageous for me to step out on faith and market my hard work. Amen for the post, sis!

Comment on Will DRM Hurt Your Self-Published Book Sales? by Mads Olesen

While it's true that DRM restricts the user in some ways, it also prevents blatant piracy and file sharing.

I publish my first book in DRM-free pdf format, and about 6 months later I found that sales dropped off sharply. I did some research and found out someone had uploaded it to a free file sharing website and was publishing the link through Twitter.

In effect he had made my book free for everyone.

I've had to do a revised and expanded version of the book (from 108 to 200+ pages), and I'm now looking for a publisher which offers DRM protection of PDF files (and, unlike Lulu.com, offers the buyer the right to print the book).

Thanks,

Coach Olesen,
